Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor of State of Osun, Special Guest of Honour has stated that Osun state is set to become the IT hub of Nigeria during the recently organized National Information Technology Merit Award (NITMA). Jidaw notes that NITMA is organized annually by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) to celebrate and honour top achievers in information technology.
Aregbesola commended NCS for the developmental role it plays in IT and for organizing such an inspiring event. Jidaw observes that the Governor was quite impressed with NITMA 2012 and he particularly congratulated NCS President, Sir Demola Aladekomo, for his leadership in hosting such an outstanding honour ceremony, noting that celebrating achievers helps in stimulating growth and innovation.
State of Osun – the IT Hub of Nigeria
Aregbesola underlined the importance of forward looking utilization of technology for development at all levels and in all sectors. In the opinion of Jidaw this was best amplified when Engineer Aregbesola highlighted the achievements of his administration in IT. Outlining his technology vision for Osun state he enthusiastically shared information with the audience about Osun state government’s innovative technology based initiatives, especially in the field of education.
Noting that multistakeholder collaboration is essential for success in deploying technology to drive development, he further invited NCS and other stakeholders in IT to partner with the state in accelerating technology development. Jidaw observed that many at the event, which was full of top level technology stakeholders, were encouraged by this invitation and appear ready to take the Governor up. Aregbesola stated emphatically that his government is focused on making Osun state the IT hub of Nigeria. He called for the support of the Nigeria Computer Society in the realization of his administration’s vision.
Host of 2013 NCS Conference
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the NCS 2013 Conference hosting flag to the Special Guest of Honour, and Governor of State of Osun, Engineer Rauf Aregbesola. Jidaw notes that this is both symbolic and future oriented, as the State of Osun will host the 2013 International Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society. NCS is the leading and largest association of Information Technology practitioners, interest groups and stakeholders in Nigeria. The annual NCS conference is Nigeria’s largest assembly gathering of high-level stakeholders from business, industry, education, government and social communities.
The event was therefore utilized by the Governor to emphasize and confirm Osun state’s readiness and acceptance to host the next NCS Conference scheduled for July 2013. “The government and wonderful people of Osun State look forward to hosting NCS members and other delegates/resource persons to the 2013 NCS International Conference and AGM in Oshogbo”. Hosting and engaging with the leading professional and advocacy group in technology, NCS, is in line with Osun state’s desire to be the IT hub of Nigeria. Jidaw recommends great vision, knowledge driven insights and sincere commitment to creative, strategic and well thought through planning, and purposeful, merit based action to get to this destination.
The high profile event was held this year at the prestigious Civic Centre in Victoria-Island, Lagos, Nigeria. 2012 NITMA was well attended by dignitaries from all areas of IT and all walks of life. “IT is too important to left alone to IT practitioners”. To Jidaw, IT is a weapon of change that needs to be deployed in an inclusive and meaningful manner. Jidaw therefore encourages everyone to join NCS, Osun State government and other forward looking stakeholders in leveraging on IT to drive growth and development in Nigeria.
