Nigeria Information Technology Professionals In Civil Service (NITPCS) Interest Group Created
The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) which met on Tuesday 22nd of July, 2014 extensively deliberated the proposal on the creation of an interest group of Information Technology professionals in the Civil Service in Nigeria (Those in the employ of government at all levels; the Federal, State and Local Government Councils in the Nation).
NEC of NCS provisionally approved the proposal for the establishment of the Nigeria Information Technology Professionals In Civil Service (NITPCS) which was initiated by the Interim National President Mr. Omosola R. A. who doggedly led the push for the formation of the group, which is believed to be long overdue.
According to the promoters, “ICT practitioners in the government circle were like a sheep without a shepherd”, with no specialized pressure group within the NCS fold dedicated to monitoring ICT implementation of government and protect the working condition and professional interests of IT professionals in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the Federal, States and Local Government level.
VISION AND MISSION
The group’s vision and mission are as follows:
Promote professionalism, provide conducive environment for continuous career development and progression; protection of member’s interest and condition of their practice.
To enable the government to drive the Information Technology (IT) component of IT polices and professionalize “IT” practice in Nigerian Civil/Public services.
Some Issues of Interest
• The creation of Information Technology Department in Ministries and Agencies of Federal/State governments, as well as the employment of IT professionals to man the IT departments.
• Implementation of the ICT cadre in all level of the civil service (Federal, State and Local Governments) The implementation of hazard allowances for IT professionals in the service according to international best practices.
• Now that IT is an enabler to every sector of the economy, it is imperative for the society to purse and define the professional benefits to core professionals operating among the government setups such that such people can also be liable when they misbehave and engage themselves in nonprofessional or sharp practices in the course of duty.
• In working with government, individuals or firms should be made to present membership license. Where there are issues relating to professional misconduct, such parties can be questioned by the CPN/NCS Disciplinary committee. Vibrant Committees of CPN/NCS focused on professionalism will give the nation a sanitized practicing environment.
The Inaugural Meeting of the Nigeria Information Technology Professionals In Civil Service was held at the Nike Lake Resort, Enugu on Thursday 24th July, 2014.
