The Nigeria Computer Society decries the alarming and rising rate of violence as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the country. The abduction of over 200 schools girls from Government Girls’ College, Chibok, Borno State is to say the least barbaric, uncivilized and against all norms of humanity.
If the reason for abduction of these girls by Boko Haram is their hatred for western education, one wonders why they use the products of western education such as internet, video and other gadgets to terrorize the whole country. Such callous actions should be condemned by all without reservation.
NCS further denounces in no uncertain terms the threat by Boko Haram leaders to sell the kidnapped girls. NCS stands with all well meaning individuals and organizations to condemn this gross violation of human rights.
In this regard we consider as apt the Government stand to negotiate with the terrorist sect to safely reunite our girls with their families. But not to swap them with Boko Haram prisoners. What is the Boko Haram replacement for innocent souls they have killed by their murderous action? Our Girls are not criminals.
The sophistication of the Boko Haram operations outsmarting the military in manner in which they have been doing suggests the outfit benefits from the collaboration of experienced international terrorist group making their operation transcend the normal military combative approach.
With the highest professional regards, Nigeria Computer Society therefore recommends the immediate and appropriate use of ICT tools to tackle the insecurity in the land. Federal Government must as a matter of priority establish a National Biometric Database Program. There is a need to address and extract functional utility from the present databases maintained by FRSC, Police, NIMC, Banks etc. Furthermore, other ICT devices – Surveillance cameras, Social Network analysis, Biometry surveillance Data mining, Satellite Imagery, IP devices should be employed professionally to checkmate insecurity in our dear country.
Nigeria Computer Society is ready and willing to partner with the Federal Government to actualise this.
God bless Nigeria.
