As the ICT world looks forward to the Institute of Software Practitioners of Nigeria (ISPON) 2013 National Software Conference and Competition, the UN has endorsed the need to place software high on the nation’s development agenda. Professor Emeritus Tapio Varis the UN Chair on e-Learning will be delivering the Keynote at the event scheduled to hold between 22-23 October, 2013 at the Tinapa Knowledge City, Tinapa, Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
The forward looking ICT event is organized annually by ISPON in partnership with the Government of Cross-River State. The 2013 Theme is: “Software Strategies for Retooling the Workforce (SORWORK)”. The Governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke has also reaffirmed his commitment and support to the event.
Prof. Tapio Varis – UNESCO Chair in Global e-Learning and Chair of Professional Education, with an emphasis on global learning environment at the Research Centre for Vocational Education, University of Tampere, Finland. He is a Principal Research Associate at UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and a member of the Governing Board of the UNESCO Institute for Information Technologies in Education, the European Commission Media Literacy Expert Group, and the Digital Literacy Expert Group.
The conference audience is expected to include International/ECOWAS ICT Experts, Nigerian ICT Professionals/Engineers, Hot-Head Coders/Software-Developers, Government Policy makers from Federal and State MDAs, Lecturers and Researchers, Venture Capitalists, Students of Computer Science related courses from tertiary institutions around the federation, ICT Journalists and other stakeholders.
In addition to the Keynote to be delivered by Prof. Emeritus Tapio Vari, the selected distinguished Expert group includes the following: Dr. Engr. Ernest Ndukwe – Former EVC of NCC & Chairman Open Media Group, Prof. Pat Utomi – founder, Center for Values in Leadership, Hon. Amb. Nkoyo Toyo – Member Federal House of Representatives, Engr. Alfred Okoigun – MD/CEO Arco Petrochemicals Ltd, Barbara James – founder Henshaw Capital Partners, Prof. Charles Ayo – VC Covenant University and Prof. Musbau Akanji – VC FUT Minna.
The release from ISPON indicates that Prof. Tapio is already promoting the conference internationally in USA, Europe, Japan and Africa, at the highest level of Intellectual knowledge Domain which is evident from his correspondence with President, ISPON, Mr. Chris Uwaje. He expressed the desire to “ make Nigeria more visible internationally in the media”.
This year ISPON will give significant room to speakers, between the ages of 22 to 35 “in line with global practices as the revolution in the ICT industry is driven by this group of people. Experienced industry practitioners would serve as session discussants and panelists”.
ISPON has created a Broadband Pavilion at the 2013 conference venue to promote inclusive broadband connectivity in the country. The National Broadband Initiative and Plan will be highlighted and opportunities provided for Service providers, policy makers and regulators to showcase broadband plans and strategies. A Free Software Gate will be provided for software start-ups will showcase their software solutions to conference participants.
The Software competition is a major highlight and crowd puller – students from Tertiary institutions in the country will compete for top honours, the title of “Best Software Developer Team” of the year and outstanding reward and recognition at the event
