The International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) will be organizing international conferences and similar events within information processing in the year 2014. Established in 1960 under the auspices of UNESCO, IFIP is the leading global organization in Information and Communications Technologies and Sciences, recognized by the UN, as the body representing IT societies from all over the world. The Nigeria Computer Society is a member of IFIP.
IFIP events are organized in co-operation with its national member organizations and others from 56 countries or regions, covering all 5 continents with a total membership of over half a million. With the IFIP Secretariat in Laxenburg, Austria, the structure of IFIP consists of a Board, General Assembly, Past Presidents, Standing Committees, Technical Committees and Working Groups. While the secretariat takes cares of administration and general organization, the technical committees which are divided into working groups are at the core of IFIP activities.
Many IFIP conferences and events generate proceedings published by the IFIP publisher. IFIP has a digital library that contains an index and abstracts for IFIP publications, most of which are proceedings from IFIP conferences. IFIP also publishes journals through its Technical Committees and working Groups.
IFIP provides members of IT societies with meeting and networking opportunities for sharing experience, and discussing challenges and opportunities. With IFIP members of such societies have access to increased knowledge sharing opportunities, professional development as well as wider networking and collaborative experiences and opportunities in the world of Information Technology.
Highlighting challenges and opportunities as well as the sharing of global best practices on topical and important issues enhances relevance and development of capacity. With the active participation of members societies, we can expect even more from IFIP in 2014. Its antecedents and activities indicate that IFIP clearly aims to be the voice of the global IT sector and profession. For sustainability and impact, it must continue to be a voice that actively fosters the development, deployment and utilization of Information Technology and related technologies for inclusive growth for all.
