Geared towards bringing amazing women into the awesome world of technology, Django Girls will hold a one-day programming workshop for women and girls in Lagos. The free skills development event is for ladies interested in starting out in web development.
Foundational in nature, Jidaw notes that it is a “start from scratch” program. It presents women and girls who are interested in web development but have no experience and no idea of what it takes to build websites, with a unique learning opportunity. Basic web development skills will therefore be covered.
Though the workshop is free, women and girls who are interested need to apply as the program will accommodate only 30 women. Come with your interest, and come with your laptop. “If you are a woman, you know English and have a laptop – you can apply for a pass!.”
Django Girls is a non-profit organization that builds the capacity of women by organizing free web development workshops in different cities around the world. Jidaw is captivated by the “We inspire women to fall in love with programming” assertion and message on the Django Girls website.
The nonprofit makes progress in getting more girls and women into this high value areas of technology through the efforts of contributors, mentors and volunteers who provide tools, resources and support. Established in Berlin in July 2014, it appears this will be its first workshop in Lagos. The Lagos workshop is being organized by Aisha Bello.
Jidaw asks: Interested? When is it holding and how can you be part of it? The workshop will take place on February 20, 2016, with an initial pre-installation party holding on February 19. Interestingly and with an uncommon spirit of giving the organizers have expressed their readiness to assist interested ladies based outside Lagos with “financial aid to get to Lagos or “assistance with getting accommodation“ in Lagos.
Also another break with convention is that the workshop has no age restrictions. You are neither too old nor too young to be part of the experience. Not just that – breakfast and lunch are free. Indeed, there is no room for excuses.
Jidaw commends this worthy initiative and sends best wishes for a successful outing.
