Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is set to enhance the country’s Computer Science Research and Development culture and performance with its upcoming forum holding in University of Lagos from November 14 to 16, 2012. It is a critical step towards building the Nigerian IT Research and Innovation Ecosystem.
Information Technology (IT) affects all areas of life. Research and innovation have been the major drivers of the tremendous impact the computer science and technology industry has had on so society. Today’s knowledge society is one in which science, technology and innovation is critical to development.
According to Dr. Adesina Sodiya, NCS Chairman, Publications, Standards, Research & Development Committee, the workshop became a necessity because IT/Computer Science Research and Development is an inevitable requirement for national development. In his view research and development in IT needs to be strengthened in capacity and contribution to positively transform the Nigerian economy and society.
NCS stresses that it is impossible for the country to develop without the promotion of research and innovation. This is essential for unlocking new potential. Nigeria needs innovators who can provide solutions to address the nation’s developmental challenges. Properly thought through innovation programs can aid income and wealth creation as well as the development of industries that employ in significant numbers. NCS is committed to pushing boundaries in information technology research to drive improvements in society. The forum intends to build understanding of social and commercial exploitation of research opportunities to create jobs, new opportunities and wealth for the nation.
The workshop is in line with the promise of NCS President, Demola Aladekomo that NCS will spearhead initiatives that enhance its relevance in society. Taking research to innovation will help the country competes globally and create knowledge-intensive, technology-driven businesses. The workshop will address this priority area. Examples of successful IT innovation will also be showcased.
Bridging IT Research Human Capacity Gap
Unique knowledge sharing opportunities will be provided for researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs. Identifying and examining significant IT research trends and R and D investment areas, particularly in areas that have potential for addressing the country’s key development challenges are expected to be major highlights. Building human capacity for scientific and research in computing is critical for enhancing research contribution and quality. Through the forum combing practice with training closes this capacity gap.
Participants will be guided on modern Computer Science/IT Research methodologies and tools by veteran academics and consultants. Practicals, assessment, modeling and simulation are all necessities to be covered. Though IT research can be rewarding and exciting, researchers often need career direction. Mentoring and career guidance will highlight the rewards, challenges, opportunities and career planning essentials in IT research.
The workshop is also an avenue to learn firsthand about grants, fellowships, scholarships, post graduate studies and forms of support for IT research. A must attend session is the session on writing techniques for grant seeking proposals. Case studies of successful IT research activities will be examined. The forum in addition intends to encourage the formation of research groups as well as roundtable discussions between the academia to address outstanding issues of research and development in Computer Science/Information technology.
Research and Innovation Ecosystem
To foster innovation for significant impact it is essential to examine how to enhance research collaboration between the academia, government and industry. NCS therefore holds the workshop as its contribution towards building Nigeria’s IT research and innovation ecosystem. Participants should expect learning, empowerment and engagement in stimulating IT research and innovation and the development of relevant research and innovation policies.
According to Dr. Sodiya, NCS seeks to improve the connection between research and development and successful innovation of new products. Successful research and innovation should be a priority for all stakeholders who desire growth in Nigeria. In view of the fact that research and innovation requires considerable human, financial and other resources, NCS calls on the country’s universities, research centers, as well as public and private sector operators to use the workshop to engage, develop strategies and invest in research and innovation.
Researchers, inventors, entrepreneurs, investors and policy-makers will all exchange ideas and work towards progress in this area. Being an active member of the ecosystem is about creating the future. To paraphrase Steve Jobs, “research and innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.”
NCS is committed to ensuring Computer Science/Information Technology research is well, alive and thriving in Nigeria. It is a purposeful intervention geared towards leveraging on Information and Communication Technology and Science and Technology to drive the much needed social and economic progress.
