BANKOLE OLUBAMISE PASSES ON
It is with a heavy heart that I inform you about the passing on of Bankole Olubamise, our brother, friend and colleague on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Bankole was very active in ICT4D consulting and advocacy as well as civil society engagement as Executive Director/CEO of Development Information Network (DevNet).
He was full of remarkable ideas and boundless energy, and will be remembered for his enormous contributions to ICT policy making in Nigeria. He is the author of 7 Books and numerous contributions to Publications on ICT, Human Rights, Foreign Investment, Environment and Trade Policy, Democracy and Development. He led Nigeria’s Civil Society Delegation to the 2005 World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) and facilitated and produced an ICT television programme on developing the information society and the knowledge economy in Nigeria “i-Society” for several years on national television.
He was a member of the National ICT4D Strategy Development and Implementation Committee (2006-2011) and organized stakeholder ownership workshops across the country to draw inputs to the development of the National ICT4D Plan. He was also a member of the National Software Policy Development Committee 2010. He has been speaker and resource person at e-Nigeria conferences and those of us who attended last year’s Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) conference held in Osun state will remember he was one of the conference speakers. Bankole was very passionate about ICT for Development, often displaying extraordinary commitment to the cause. It is a painful parting but many of us are thankful for the experiences we shared.
The Wake keep was held on Friday August 22, 2014. Bankole Olubamise was buried on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Cemetery by Lugbe Divisional Police Station / Barracks, Abuja.
It is sad loss for the civil society and ICT communities, his colleagues, friends, and indeed for his family. Our thoughts are with his wife, children and family members. May God protect, comfort and strengthen them. Amen.
Bankole, Rest in Peace. Amen.
