Academia in Information Technology Profession (AITP), the national platform for scholars and researchers in Nigeria’s tech space, has introduced social media platforms on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Jidaw notes that the initiative fittingly comes up as this first ever interest group dedicated to tech professionals in academia and research in the country prepares for its 2018 International Conference on Information Technology in Education & Development (ITED) which holds from 24th – 27th April, 2018 at Baze University, Abuja.
Relevance and impact requires going beyond traditional media. AITP and similar organizations need to leverage opportunities provided by this new tech enabled reality. Jidaw insists that recognition of the power and influence of social networks is imperative. To rely on convention is to go backwards. Jidaw expects emphasis will be on content and engagement in this space through these social media networks.
In essence, the new platforms will provide additional avenues for the large number of tech professionals in academics and research, contributing and offering services in tertiary institutions and relevant stakeholders to share ideas and network for a vibrant tech in academia community that meets the needs of the country.
Specifically, Jidaw recommends that content include: news, ideas, developments, studies and articles related to the contribution of tech professionals in academia and research, relevance of such professionals to national development and much more. It is expected that tips will also be exchanged on professional development, syllabus update and development as well as innovative practices.
The platforms will assist in achieving AITP’s objectives with regard to sharing resources, providing information and guidance on academic leadership, mentorship, collaborations in research and development while also publicizing AITP activities, contributing to policy formulation and promoting the education and training of Computer Science, Information Technology and the related areas.
In addition to AITP’s official website, members, stakeholders and the general public can now engage through the following official social media handles:
This purposeful focus on communication and marketing, in the opinion of Jidaw is clearly an exciting and modern way to improve member connection and engagement. Dynamic and interactive, the addition of our social media corporate pages positions the interest group well for the future.
The social media drive will undoubtedly raise public awareness, provide rich experiences, and expand stakeholder engagement with tech in academia and general tech community. The essence according to AITP is to contribute towards building a resourceful and thriving community offering value, substance and relevance in the fast changing and digitally connection world. For Jidaw, this is just one of the means the nation must explore to get academics and researchers in the tech space fully engaged in building our digital future.
Jidaw advises that content should be fresh, interesting and regularly updated. As AITP shares a variety of content (links, photos, videos), questions, polls, debate to encourage audience engagement, Jidaw calls for social media activities to be kept purposeful and organized.
Jidaw commends AITP for embarking on this worthy social media journey.
