Adewumi emerges as new NCS President, as NCS holds 11th International Conference and elects New National Executive Council
The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) has elected a new President in the person of Professor David Adewumi, Dean, College of Information and Communications Technology at Bells University, Ota, Ogun State. As a result of winning a keenly contested and peaceful election held during the NCS 11th International Conference, he takes over from Sir Demola Aladekomo, the Immediate Past President.
The NCS conference with the theme “e-Government and National Security” was held from Wednesday, July 24 – Friday July 26, 2013 at Iloko-Ijesa, State of Osun. Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, delivered the keynote address, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Governor, State of Osun, who was also the Conference Chief Host, chaired the President’s dinner and Governor’s forum, while Mrs. Titilayo Laoye-Tomori, Deputy Governor, State of Osun was Special Guest of Honour at the Closing Banquet. Mrs. Ibukun Odusote, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was the Guest Speaker at the NCS College of Fellows breakfast meeting.
The Voice of IT
NCS, the voice of Nigeria’s IT community is premier advocate for the deployment and advancement of IT for growth in all spheres of life in Nigeria. A world class academic and researcher, Adewumi has stated his commitment to building on the standards set by his predecessor. He assured the gathering of high performance from NCS and readiness to meeting the needs of members, as well as advancing the interests of the IT profession and industry. He stressed his dedication to ensuring continuity, adherence to NCS core values, vision and traditions.
During what proved to be the largest gathering of IT practitioners and stakeholders in Nigeria, revealing presentations and workshops at the international conference focused on e-governance and the deployment of IT for National security. NCS, the moving force behind IT industry and profession in Nigeria conferred Lifetime achievement awards on long serving NCS members who had left indelible impact in all spheres of society- Chief Don Etiebet, Mr. Tunde Ezichi, Alhaji Ladi Ogunneye, Professor G. M. M. Obi, Dr. Isaac Odeyemi and Deacon Ojinta Oji-Alala. Other recipients of the Lifetime Achievement award who were unavoidably absent are: Right Reverend Adebayo Akinde, Professor Olu Longe, Professor Adenike Osofisan and Mrs Ibukun Odusote. Early age and youth innovation was also celebrated – Gregory Essiet of University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State won the2013 Olatunji Odegbami National Information Technology Competition for Tertiary Institutions, while Grace High School, Gbagada, Lagos represented by Olusanya Kenneth and Ogbonmide Tolu won the 2013 National Information Technology Whiz Kids Competition for Secondary schools.
The new National Executive Council (NEC) of the NCS emerged in closely contested elections at the NCS Conference – NCS Osun 2013 and Annual General Meeting held on Friday July 26, 2013 at the Royal Park Hotel, Iloko-Ijesa, State of Osun. NCS is the umbrella organization of all Information Technology Professionals, Interest Groups and Stakeholders in Nigeria.
Other elected office holders who now constitute the NEC for the period 2013-2015 are: Deputy President – Prof Adesola Aderounmu; Chairman, Education & Manpower Development Committee – Dr. Adesina Sodiya; Chairman, Credentials Committee – Mrs. Owolabi V. O; Chairman, Conferences Committee – Mr. Moses Braimah; Chairman Publications, Standards & Research – Dr. Virginia Ejiofor; Chairman, Ethics & Disciplinary Committee – Mr. Abimbola Olayinka; Chairman, Publicity, Events, Trade Services Committee – Mr. Jide Awe; Ex-Officio – Computer Professionals Registration Council Representatives – Mr. Rogba Adeoye, Sir Obi Okonkwo, Mr. Raphael Omosola, Mrs. Aderonke Bello, Dr. Afolayan A. Obiniyi and Dr.Olalekan O. Ayannuga.
