Address by Nigerian Women In Information Technology (NIWIIT) President, Dr.(Mrs) Adeola Ilechukwu, at Inauguration of Lagos State Chapter of NIWIIT Held on Thursday 22nd May, 2014 at the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) National Secretariat, Alausa – Ikeja, Lagos.
I welcome you all to this inauguration ceremony of the Nigerian Women In Information Technology (NIWIIT) Lagos State Chapter. I am glad to inform you that with this inauguration today, women in the IT industry in Lagos State will be poised to close the gender gap in the industry. This is because NIWIIT is a platform for networking and mentoring women for top management positions within the industry.
As an interest group in the Nigeria Computer Society, NIWIIT provides a voice for both professional and non-professional females in the IT industry as she embarks on advocacy for them. Today, marks a new dawn in the history of IT in Lagos State as the executive members of this chapter pledge to promote professionalism, maintain the highest standard of ethics, conduct, virtue, etiquette and discipline as they carry on with their work in the various domains within the industry.
It is hoped that the inauguration of Lagos State Chapter of NIWIIT today will jump start a move that will create awareness programs for IT related services and products among women in the urban, rural and sub-urban areas in Lagos State.
Precisely on Tuesday 27th May, 2014, NIWIIT will be organizing a special event to mark the International Girls Day in ICT 2014 in Owerri. We could not observe the day on the 24th April 2014 with other nations because secondary schools in Nigeria were on Easter holiday at the time. One of the objectives of NIWIIT is to reach out to special target groups such as students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions in a bid to “catch them young.” With the project “Catching them Young” we will be facilitating the increase in the number of girls and women in the fields of technology and IT in particular.
I look forward to more women and corporate bodies within the IT industry coming to identify with/ promote NIWIIT activities as they also register with NIWIIT since it serves as an umbrella body for all the NGO’s and the privately owned computer based businesses managed by female IT professionals in Nigeria. All women in the IT industry both in the academia and the industry have a lot to benefit by registering with NIWIIT.
To all the members of the executive of NIWIIT, Lagos State Chapter that are to be inaugurated today,I encourage you all to study the NIWIIT bye-laws and seek ways by which the objectives of the body can be actualized. I also say big CONGRATULATIONS to you all!
Once again, I welcome every one that has taken out time to be a part of this auspicious occasion of THE INAUGURATION OF NIWIIT LAGOS STATE CHAPTER.
Thanks for coming and God bless you all.
Dr.(Mrs) Adeola Ilechukwu, FNCS, MCPN
