A centre of attention at the upcoming National IT Merit Awards (NITMA) organized by the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is the 2012 Information Technology IT Personality of the Year Nigeria award. This year’s nominees for the President’s Award, the IT Personality of the Year are top drawer and outstanding.
The prestigious award recognizes individuals whose contributions in Information Technology and related have been most significant. Nominated this year for this high profile award are Ernest I. Osagie – Publisher, Computer.com, Hassan U. Alao – MD, Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited, Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor – Country Manager, Google Nigeria and Sanusi Lamido Sanusi – Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria.
Award criteria include:
Outstanding contribution to the growth of Information Technology in Nigeria,
Advancement or application of Information Technology for significant value in society,
Local and International Recognition of IT and IT related activities,
Significant national impact in boosting IT penetration and driving change through IT, amongst others.
The award along with other NITMA honours build on the legacy of previous award standards established by NCS, the respected professional IT association.
2012 IT Personality of the Year Nominees
Ernest I. Osagie, Publisher, Computer.com,
Ernest I. Osagie is Publisher of (Y2k Publishing company) Publishers of Computer.com, Nigeria’s leading Information and Communications Technology publication. He is experienced in producing and circulating quality content on the Information technology industry. Previously, he was General Manager (Leaders and Company) publishers of Thisday Newspapers from 1996 to 1997. From 1997 to 2000, he was Managing Director, (Skyview Publishing Company) Publishers of Infotech Today.
Through his direction, Y2k Publishing Company has become a leader in the delivery of a knowledge-based, service-oriented monthly newspaper that aims to capture worldwide developments in ICT, for the African audience. Over the years, the newspaper contributes significantly to development by being an advocate for the critical role that technology plays in the lives of individuals, in business and in government.
Computer.com captivates through effective use of the print medium to reach and engage the intended IT community and audience. It aims to facilitate the understanding of how IT can improve personal efficiency, corporate business processes, and deliver better public services. Through his pioneering work he has contributed in no small measure to shaping the face of IT publishing in Nigeria.
Ernest I. Osagie holds an MBA in International Marketing, from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and a Bachelor’s degree in Agric Economics and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management.
MR. Hassan U. Alao, Managing Director, Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited
Mr. Hassan U. Alao is an Electronics Engineer by training and has a career experience of over 25 years in ICT. In the course of his career, he has worked with several blue-chip firms including the then Haven Computers, Leventis Group and Data Sciences Nigeria Limited to deliver several landmark ICT projects.
In 1993, he teamed up with four other colleagues to co-found Sidmach Technologies Nigeria Limited and he is currently the Managing Director of the company. Achievements include, pioneering the implementation of e-Registration service for examination bodies in the country; pioneering the use of Biometric Technology for the registration, verification and administration of examination candidates; Implementation of the online result verification system for WAEC results and a host of other solutions that have impacted positively on the Nation’s quest for the achievement of integrity, excellence in service delivery and the promotion of economic development.
Furthermore, Examination bodies such as JAMB and WAEC have enhanced efficiency in their service delivery process. Online result verification system for WAEC has helped to promote integrity and authenticity in our national life and as well enabled convenience for stakeholders in education.
Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (CON) – Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria
Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi (CON), an accomplished banker and Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, is a graduate of Economics and Islamic Law. His banking career included becoming the Chief Risk Officer in UBA Plc and FBN Plc. He rose to the position of Group Managing Director/Chief Executive officer of First Bank Plc, the largest bank in the country in January, 2009 and was appointed the 10th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in June, 2009.
Under his leadership at CBN he has significantly advanced the improvement of the banking in Nigeria through leverage on the platform of Information Technology.
In particular to drive e-payment deployment and usage to reduce the amount of cash in circulation, he has been instrumental to the implementation of Cashless Nigeria – a very key technology driven project that is affecting the economy and culture of Nigeria. Through this intervention CBN aims to transform payment and settlement systems to enhance financial inclusion, availability, reliability and cost effectiveness of payments services. He has been bold and imaginative in deploying technology to build a sound financial system in Nigeria.
Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor – Country Manager for Google Nigeria
Juliet Ehimuan Chiazor leads Google’s strategy and business growth in Nigeria and actively contributes to national strategies including broadband growth, local content development, and technology incubation.
Previously General Manager at Chams Plc leading Business, and Performance Monitoring & QA Supervisor for Telecoms at Shell Petroleum Development Company. She joined Microsoft UK for 6 years, initially as Program Manager managing Strategic Projects for MSN Europe, Middle East and Africa and then as Business Process Manager for MSN International. In 2005, Juliet left Microsoft to start Strategic Insight Consulting, focused on strategy development and collaborative programs connecting African Business leaders with global counterparts.
Juliet holds an Executive MBA from the London Business School, a Post Graduate Degree in Computer Science from the University of Cambridge, UK; and a Bachelors Degree (1st Class Honours) in Computer Engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. She is a recipient of the London Business School Global Women’s Scholarship, a Fellow of the Cambridge Commonwealth society, and a recipient of the Cambridge Selwyn College Scholar and Malaysian Commonwealth scholar awards. In 2011, she was listed in Forbes magazine as one of the top 20 youngest power women in Africa.
Who will be 2012 IT Personality of Year?
NCS members vote online annually to choose their preferred best nominee. The winner of the Prestigious IT Personality Award will be announced based on these votes during the NITMA event taking place on Friday, December 14, 2012 in Lagos. An annual event organized by the Nigeria Computer Society since 2009, the National IT Merit Award (NITMA) ceremony recognizes individuals and corporate bodies that have made significant contributions to the advancement of Information Technology for the development of Nigeria.
