Preparations are underway once more for the annual editions of the National IT competitions for students in Nigeria. The Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) is calling for participation in the 2014 Olatunji Odegbami National Information Technology Competition for Tertiary Institutions and the 2014 National Information Technology Whiz Kids Competition for Secondary Schools.
The competitions, running since 2009, are developed and run annually by NCS to stimulate information technology excellence and innovation amongst children and young people in Nigeria. NCS is committed to creating a better future for Nigeria by “Catching the IT innovators, professionals, academics, researchers and entrepreneurs Young”. Young people are the Future – NCS desires a future of inclusive, innovative growth and has therefore placed Early Age and Youth Innovation high on the NCS Agenda.
Two Annual National IT Competitions for Students
National IT competitions for young people in Nigeria are organized annually to discover excellent young talents in the nation with the ability to set global standards in IT. While the National Information Technology Whiz Kids Competition focuses on Secondary School students, the Olatunji Odegbami National Information Technology Competition is for all interested students in all tertiary institutions including Universities, Polytechnics and colleges of Education in the country.
The competition for secondary schools starts from the state level and moves to the zonal level where zonal winners emerge from the six geo-political zones in the country. Winners from the six zones compete at the grand finale and the final winners are awarded with scholarship, computer products, cash prizes and consolation prizes.
Grace High School, Gbagada, Lagos State represented by Olusanya Kenneth and Ogbonmide Tolu emerged winners of the 2013 National Information Technology Whizkids Competition.
Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State represented by Festus Ogunbayo and Isreal Oludare emerged winners of the 2012 National Information Technology Whizkids Competition.
NCS established the Olatunji Odegbami National IT Competition for Tertiary Institutions in honour and memory of Chief Olatunji Odegbami the Fourth President of the Computer Association of Nigeria (COAN) and the Second President/Chairman of Council of the Computer Professionals (Registration Council of) Nigeria (CPN).
Emmanuel Gregory Essiet of University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State won the 2012 and 2013 Olatunji Odegbami National Information Technology Competitions for Tertiary Institutions.
The 2013 finals of both competitions were held during the NCS Annual conference in Iloko-Ijesa, State of Osun in July 2013.
The 2014 finals of both competitions will be held during the NCS Annual conference in Enugu, Enugu State in July 2014.
Computer products, cash prizes, scholarship, Plaques and consolation prizes will be given to participating students, schools and winners.
